Understanding Radio Streaming and Termonology

How do I start an online radio station?

Have you ever wondered how online radio stations work? Or how you can setup your own online radio station quickly, and without huge cost?

Getting on-air is easy, and requires very little setup. This guide assumes you have the following already:

  • A computer
  • A broadband connection
  • A microphone
  • Speakers
  • The ability to install software

To get up and running you now need the three key elements for your broadcast:

  • You - The presenter and content maker
  • Us - The provider of the service that you send your content to
  • An Audience - Listeners, anyone with internet on their PC or mobile

We'll provide you with some free software to start your broadcast, you just add the link to your radio player on your site. Simple!

What's a bitrate, and why is it important?

Bitrate is the quality of the sound your listeners will hear when they tune in to your radio station. A higher bitrate will give you a better sound quality. The table below runs down what each bitrate means:

  • 64kbps - FM quality - good for speech radio
  • 96kbps - Nearly CD quality - better for mobile phones
  • 128kbps - CD quality - reccomended
  • 192kbps - Superior quality - not reccomended for mobile phones

I've seen some sites advertise 32kbps and 48kbps, do you offer these?

We don't offer 32kbps and 48kbps streams as the sound quality is too poor, and would represent poor value for money.

What are listening slots?

Listening slots are the total number of people who can be concurrently connected to your radio station.

Do you offer "unlimited slots"?
Unfortunately we don't offer an unlimited listener package, as servers only have a finite amount of capacity. If you're working on a big project, drop us a line and we'll see what we can do.

What happens if I use all my listener slots?
No more listeners will able to connect unless someone else disconnects.

Can I keep track of who's listening?
Yes, all packages come with real time reporting of who's listening.

What does 'unmetered bandwidth' mean?

Commonly, streaming providers offer an unlimited, unmetered and metered service:

  • Unmetered - The bandwidth (amount of data) you use is not measured or limited
  • Unlimited - The bandwidth is measured, but a limit is not enforced. Subject to fair use
  • Metered - The bandwidth is measured, giving you a limit of the amount of time or listeners that can connect.

Why do you offer unmetered bandwidth as your preferred package?
Our price includes the all-in price, meaning we've calculated how much your package costs per listener, which factors the cost of any bandwidth needed.

What is Auto DJ?

Auto DJ is an in-built feature that can play listeners your content when you're not broadcasting.

Can I control what plays?
Yes! You can manage your content (music, podcasts etc.) in your streaming control panel.

Are there different packages available for Auto Dj?
Yes, we sell AutoDJ based on space where you can upload your files. Details are at checkout.

What software do I need?

Can you help configure it?

What is TuneIn, and does it work with your service? is the world's biggest radio directory, where you can listen to stations, and add your own stations.

Can I add my station to
Yes, we've written a guide which will contain details of how to add your station. Please refer to your welcome pack for details.
